Design Specification (DESIGN.md)

Overview

This design system establishes a sophisticated and high-contrast visual language tailored for modern developer tools. Built on a foundation of deep, near-black backgrounds and crisp white text, it creates an immersive, focused environment. The aesthetic is defined by a vibrant, electric purple accent that signals interactivity and brand energy against the minimalist, monochromatic canvas. The interface feels dense with information yet clean and legible, achieved through precise typography, subtle borders, and a clear hierarchy. The overall mood is professional, technical, and futuristic, conveying both power and clarity.

Colors

The color system is primarily dark, using black and dark gray to create depth and minimize visual noise, while a single vibrant accent provides energy and focus.

  • background: The foundational black (#000000) that spans the entire viewport, ensuring maximum contrast and a sense of immersion.
  • surface: A very dark gray (#0B0B0C) used for components like cards and panels, creating a subtle but distinct separation from the main background.
  • primary: Pure white (#FFFFFF) is used for primary buttons and for text elements that need the highest prominence, such as the primary headline.
  • text: A near-white gray (#F5F5F5) for most body copy and headings, providing excellent readability against dark backgrounds without the harshness of pure white.
  • text-faded: A semi-transparent white (#FFFFFF9E) is used for secondary text, descriptions, and subtle labels, creating a clear visual hierarchy.
  • accent: A vibrant, electric purple (#9C75F7) is the core brand color. It's used for interactive highlights, status indicators, and decorative elements to draw attention and inject energy.
  • border: A subtle, semi-transparent white (#FFFFFF1A) is used for defining the boundaries of components like cards and dividers, maintaining structure without adding heaviness.

Typography

The typography system is a dual-font approach, combining a custom brand font for impact with a highly legible sans-serif for information, and a monospace font for technical details.

  • Display & Headings: The "Moden Sans" font family is used for all major headings (display, h1, h2, h3). It features tight letter-spacing and a medium font weight (500), giving a strong, modern, and confident voice to the brand's key messages.
  • Body: The "Inter" font family is used for all body text, ledes, and smaller labels. Its clean, neutral character and a regular weight (400) ensure readability and clarity for detailed information. It is used in various sizes (body-large, body, body-small) with generous line heights to prevent text from feeling dense.
  • Monospace: "JetBrains Mono" is used for technical details like code snippets, values, and file names. This provides a clear, functional distinction between standard text and code-related content.

Layout

The layout is built on a centered container that provides a consistent structure for content across the site. The density is tight, with components and sections spaced out using a responsive, viewport-based scale.

  • Containers: The primary content container has a max-width of 90rem (1440px) and uses responsive margins (clamp(1rem, ..., 3rem)) to ensure proper spacing on all screen sizes.
  • Grid: Components like the footer_nav use a 12-column grid, while other layouts employ a two-column split for content and preview areas. The core section for demonstrating features (build) uses a main grid to create a sticky, interactive tutorial experience.
  • Spacing: Spacing is managed via a comprehensive scale of CSS variables (--space-1 to --space-8) that scale with the viewport. These variables are used for padding, margins, and gaps between elements, ensuring a consistent rhythm throughout the design.

Elevation & Depth

The design uses depth sparingly and purposefully, relying on surface colors and subtle borders rather than heavy shadows to create hierarchy. A sophisticated spotlight effect adds interactivity on key surfaces.

  • Surfaces & Borders: Depth is primarily communicated by layering surfaces. Components like cards (bcard) and panels (build_panel) sit on a slightly lighter surface color (#0B0B0C) than the background (#000000), separated by a faint border color (#FFFFFF1A).
  • Shadows: Shadows are used for high-elevation components like popovers and the main application window mockup. For example, the .win element has a deep inner highlight and a large, dark outer shadow to give it a physical, elevated presence.
  • Spotlight Effect: Some interactive panels feature a [data-spotlight] effect, where a radial gradient appears and follows the cursor. This creates a tactile, dynamic sense of depth and focus on the surface.

Shapes

The shape language is defined by a consistent and modest use of rounded corners, giving the interface a polished and modern feel without being overly soft.

  • Radius Scale: A defined radius scale (--radius-small: .5rem, --radius-main: .75rem, --radius-large: 1.25rem) is used to create consistency across components.
  • Buttons & Inputs: Buttons and input fields predominantly use the small radius (0.5rem), creating a crisp, precise feel.
  • Cards & Panels: Cards and larger panels use the main (0.75rem) or large (1.25rem) radius for a softer, more substantial appearance.
  • Pills & Badges: The badge component uses a full radius, creating a fully rounded "pill" shape.

Components

The components are designed to be functional and information-dense, using the core visual language of high contrast, subtle borders, and vibrant accents.

Button

Buttons are a fundamental interactive element, primarily defined by their background. The primary button is a solid white block with black text, creating the strongest possible call to action. The secondary button is a ghost-like component with a transparent background, subtle border, and white text, providing a less prominent but clear alternative. Both use a small border radius and transition smoothly on hover.

Navigator Tree

This component is designed for navigating a file structure. It features a dense layout with small icons and labels. The selected item is highlighted with a vibrant accent color, while related components are colored differently, creating a clear visual language for different node types.

Feature Demo Panel

A recurring panel (build_panel) used to showcase key features like data binding, design variables, and component props. It has a dark surface color and a subtle border, acting as a self-contained interactive demonstration. Inside, it uses form-like elements with labels and inputs to simulate a real user interface.

Hero Section

The hero section is bold and prominent, using the largest display typography (text-style-display). It features a large, tilted application screenshot on a geometric stage (hero_stage), creating a strong visual anchor for the page. The typography is centered, and the primary action is a prominent white button.

Do's and Don'ts

Do

  • Do maintain a high-contrast dark theme, using #000000 for the base background and pure white (#FFFFFF) for key text and primary buttons to ensure readability and focus.
  • Do use the electric purple (#9C75F7) as the sole accent color to highlight interactive elements, state indicators, and brand-specific details.
  • Do leverage the defined typography scale, using the "Moden Sans" font for headlines and "Inter" for body text to create a clear, modern, and legible hierarchy.
  • Do use a consistent and modest border radius (0.5rem to 1.25rem) across all components to maintain a polished and cohesive shape language.
  • Do create subtle depth by layering a slightly lighter surface color (#0B0B0C) on top of the background (#000000), separated by a faint border, rather than relying on heavy shadows.

Don't

  • Don't introduce additional bright or saturated colors. The palette should remain monochromatic with a single vibrant accent.
  • Don't use heavy, dark drop shadows for elevation on standard UI elements; rely on surface color and borders for separation.
  • Don't use overly rounded or "bubbly" shapes. Corner radii should remain subtle and consistent with the defined scale.
  • Don't mix font families or use decorative typefaces. Stick to the brand, sans-serif, and monospace font stacks.
  • Don't use pure black text on dark backgrounds. Always use the defined text or text-faded colors to ensure optimal contrast and comfort.
