Design Specification (DESIGN.md)

Overview

This design system is defined by a stark, high-contrast, monochrome aesthetic that prioritizes energy and clarity. It employs a minimalist framework where bold, oversized typography and generous whitespace take center stage, creating an editorial and premium feel. The mood is confident, modern, and athletic, using a near-black and white palette punctuated by subtle grays for hierarchical separation. The system is designed to be visually loud yet functionally quiet, ensuring that content and photography are the primary focus.

Colors

The color system is fundamentally monochrome, establishing a sharp and direct visual tone. Color is used functionally rather than decoratively.

  • Primary (#111111): A near-black used for all primary text, icons, and high-priority interactive elements. It creates a strong, high-contrast reading experience against the white background.
  • Secondary (#707072): A medium gray used for muted text, subtitles, and less critical information. It provides a clear visual hierarchy without introducing disruptive color.
  • Background (#FFFFFF): A pure white that serves as the canvas for the entire interface, contributing to the clean, minimalist, and spacious feel.
  • Surface (#F5F5F5): A light gray used for subtle backgrounds, such as the promotional banner, search input, and product card image backgrounds. It provides a gentle contrast to the white page.
  • Border (#E5E5E5): A light gray used for subtle dividers and outlines, defining structure without adding visual weight.
  • Error (#DE3800): A vivid orange-red used exclusively for error messages and status indicators, ensuring they stand out immediately against the monochrome palette.

Typography

Typography is a core component of the visual identity, characterized by a mix of a distinctive display font for headlines and a highly legible sans-serif for all other text. The hierarchy is established through dramatic size differences and weight variations.

  • hero-display: The most prominent text style, using a condensed, impactful font ("Nike Futura ND") at a very large size. It is used for key headlines in hero sections to create a bold, energetic statement.
  • section-heading: A clean, medium-weight sans-serif at a fixed size of 24px. It is used for titling major content sections like "Featured" and "Trending."
  • body-medium: The primary body text style, using a 500 font weight for product titles and other key information. It is legible and provides a sense of importance.
  • body-large: The standard body text, using a 400 font weight for descriptions and secondary text, ensuring readability and a comfortable reading rhythm.
  • utility-label & utility-caption: Small, 12px fonts used for auxiliary information like navigation links in the top bar, promotional details, and product size options.

Layout

The layout is built on a grid system that emphasizes alignment and generous spacing. It uses a max-width container (1920px) to manage content on large screens while ensuring it remains centered.

  • Containers: The main content area is constrained by a max-width of 1920px and uses horizontal padding (3rem) to create a spacious feel.
  • Grid: The primary layout is a 12-column grid, with key sections like the header utilizing grid-column: span to organize elements (logo, nav, utilities).
  • Spacing: A consistent spacing scale is derived from observed rem and px values (8px, 16px, 24px, 32px, 48px, 80px). This creates a predictable and balanced rhythm. For instance, section titles are separated from content by 3.75rem (60px) or 5.25rem (84px).
  • Density: The system prefers a spacious, low-density layout. This is achieved through significant vertical padding in sections and generous margins between product cards in carousels.
  • Responsive: The design is responsive, with a primary breakpoint at 960px. At this breakpoint, hero typography scales down, and certain interactive elements (like carousel navigation arrows) appear.

Elevation & Depth

Depth is not conveyed through heavy shadows but through subtle layering, borders, and background color changes. The design remains flat and clean.

  • Borders: Used extensively to define structure. A 1px solid #E5E5E5 border separates the main content from the footer.
  • Overlays: A gradient overlay (linear-gradient(to top, rgba(0,0,0,0.6), transparent)) is used on hero images to ensure text remains legible against varying backgrounds.
  • Backdrops: A semi-transparent dark overlay (rgba(17, 17, 17, 0.36)) is used to create a modal-like effect when the mobile navigation is active, focusing attention on the foreground content.

Shapes

The shape language is a mix of sharp, rectangular forms and soft, rounded elements. This contrast creates visual interest and guides the user.

  • Primary Shapes: Cards, images, and main containers use sharp, 0px border-radius corners, contributing to a structured and modern look.
  • Interactive Elements: Buttons and search bars often employ a "pill" shape with a full border-radius (9999px), softening the interface and making them feel friendly and tappable.
  • Rounded Rectangles: Some UI elements, like product image backgrounds and tag containers, use a subtle 4px or 16px border radius.

Components

The interface is composed of several recurring, clearly defined components.

Navigation

  • Top Utility Bar: A 36px tall bar with a light gray background (#F5F5F5). It contains small, secondary links (e.g., "Help," "Sign Up") in a 500 weight, 12px font.
  • Main Header: A 60px tall white bar. It contains the logo (left), primary navigation links (center), and utility icons (search, wishlist, cart) on the right. Navigation links are 16px weight 500 and gain a 2px black underline on hover. The search bar is a pill-shaped input (border-radius: 24px) with a light gray background (#F5F5F5).
  • Footer: A simple footer with a 0.5px top border. It contains copyright information and legal links styled in a muted gray (#707072).

Buttons

  • Pill Button: A white button with black text, used for primary actions on hero images (e.g., "Shop"). It has a 24px border radius, a height of 36px, and a 0.2s background color transition on hover.
  • Icon Button: Circular buttons (border-radius: 50%) are used for carousel controls and header icons. They have a transparent background that turns light gray (#E5E5E5) on hover.

Product Card

  • A clean, minimal card with a white background and sharp corners.
  • Image Container: The product image sits on a subtle, light gray background (rgba(0, 19, 37, 0.04)).
  • Text Content: The card title is bold (500), the subtitle is a muted gray (#707072), and the price is in a bold, primary color. All text is left-aligned.

Hero Carousel

  • A full-bleed image/video carousel.
  • Content Overlay: Text and buttons are overlaid on a dark gradient background for readability.
  • Typography: The hero title uses the massive, high-impact display font.
  • Controls: Pagination dots are at the bottom center. A circular pause/play button and navigation arrows are positioned in the bottom right corner.

Do's and Don'ts

Do

  • Maintain a strict black, white, and gray color palette. Use color only for status indicators like errors.
  • Prioritize high-contrast text for readability.
  • Use the specified display font for hero-level headlines to create maximum visual impact.
  • Employ generous whitespace to separate content and create a sense of premium quality.
  • Use sharp, 0px corners for primary containers and cards.
  • Use pill shapes (border-radius: 9999px) for interactive elements like buttons and search bars.
  • Ensure all text on overlaid images is placed over a dark gradient or solid overlay for legibility.
  • Use the defined typographic scale to establish a clear and consistent hierarchy.

Don't

  • Don't introduce any decorative colors into the core interface.
  • Don't use heavy drop shadows; rely on borders and background color for layering.
  • Don't use soft or rounded corners for product cards or primary layout sections.
  • Don't use a font other than the specified "Helvetica Now Text" for body copy.
  • Don't overcrowd sections; always err on the side of more space.
  • Don't deviate from the established spacing scale.
