Design Specification (DESIGN.md)
Overview
The design system presents a warm, editorial aesthetic built on soft ivory tones and high-contrast charcoal typography. It combines a classic serif body face with a geometric sans-serif display face, creating a sophisticated, intellectual mood. The visual language is restrained but expressive, using generous whitespace, earthy accent colors, and minimal ornamentation to convey a sense of calm authority and thoughtful precision.
Colors
The palette is built on a warm ivory foundation with deep charcoal for text and interactive elements, supported by a range of muted earth tones.
- background: The primary page background, a very light warm ivory (#faf9f5), creating a soft, paper-like canvas.
- background-secondary: A slightly darker ivory (#f0eee6) used for subtle surface differentiation and section backgrounds.
- surface: Pure white (#ffffff) reserved for cards and elevated surfaces that need to stand out from the page background.
- text: Deep charcoal (#141413) used for all primary text, buttons, and high-emphasis elements, providing strong contrast against the ivory background.
- text-muted: A medium warm gray (#5e5d59) for secondary text, captions, and de-emphasized content.
- text-agate: A lighter warm gray (#b0aea5) used for tertiary text and footer links, indicating lower hierarchy.
- border: A very subtle translucent charcoal (#1414131a) used for dividing lines and card borders, visible but unobtrusive.
- border-hover: A slightly more opaque charcoal (#14141333) for hover states on borders.
- accent-clay: A warm terracotta (#d97757) used sparingly for interactive accents and brand highlights.
- accent-kraft: A muted tan (#d4a27f) for secondary accent surfaces.
- accent-oat: A light beige (#e3dacc) used as a background tint for certain banner cards.
Typography
The typography system pairs a geometric sans-serif for display and detail text with a classic serif for body copy, creating a clear hierarchy and a distinct editorial feel.
- display-xxl / display-xl / display-l: Large, bold sans-serif headings used for hero statements and major section titles. Tight letter spacing and balanced text wrapping create a strong, confident presence.
- display-m / display-s / display-xs: Medium and smaller sans-serif headings for sub-sections, card titles, and navigation. These use semibold or bold weights to maintain hierarchy.
- paragraph-l / paragraph-m / paragraph-s: Serif body text at various sizes for long-form reading. The serif face adds a literary, humanistic quality to the content.
- detail-m / detail-s / detail-xs: Sans-serif text for UI elements, labels, buttons, and metadata. These are smaller, functional sizes with regular weight.
- mono: A monospace font used sparingly for code-like elements and uppercase labels, adding a technical contrast to the editorial style.
Layout
The layout uses a 12-column grid system constrained to a maximum width of 89.5rem, with fluid gutters and margins that scale with viewport size. The system is highly responsive, collapsing to flex layouts on tablet and mobile breakpoints.
- Containers: The main container is capped at the site width minus margins, with a smaller container for centered content. Full-width containers are used for immersive sections.
- Grid: A 12-column grid with a gutter that scales from 2rem to 5rem. On tablet and below, grids collapse to stacked flex columns.
- Spacing: A modular spacing scale based on rem values, with section spacing tokens for small (4rem), medium (6rem), main (10rem), and large (14rem) vertical rhythm.
- Density: The layout is airy and spacious, with generous padding around content and sections. The density increases on smaller screens where margins and padding compress.
- Responsive: Breakpoints at 991px and 767px adjust grid behavior, typography sizes, and component padding. Text sizes use
clamp()for fluid scaling.
Elevation & Depth
Depth is communicated primarily through subtle background color shifts and fine borders rather than heavy shadows.
- Shadows: A soft, multi-layered shadow (
0 2px 2px #00000003, 0 4px 4px #00000005, 0 16px 24px #0000000a) is used on dropdown menus and interactive cards on hover, creating a gentle lift. - Borders: Thin borders (0.0625rem) in a translucent charcoal define card edges, dividers, and interactive elements. These borders become slightly more opaque on hover.
- Surfaces: The ivory background, secondary ivory, and white surfaces create a three-tier surface hierarchy. Dark sections use a deep charcoal background with inverted text for contrast.
- Blur & Backdrop: No significant blur or backdrop effects are used, keeping the interface crisp and flat.
Shapes
The shape language is soft but restrained, favoring small to medium rounded corners that complement the editorial feel.
- Radii: Buttons and small components use a 0.5rem radius. Cards and larger containers use up to 1rem. Pill shapes (100vw) are reserved for special elements like chips or badges.
- Borders: Border thickness is consistently 0.0625rem. Borders are used to define edges without adding visual weight.
- Corners: Corners are gently rounded, never sharp or overly circular, maintaining a balance between approachability and sophistication.
Components
Navigation
A sticky top navigation bar with a transparent background over the page. It contains a logo, dropdown menus for navigation links, and a primary call-to-action button. Dropdowns appear on hover with a soft shadow and a white background. Links use sans-serif detail text and become underlined on hover.
Buttons
Buttons come in primary (dark charcoal background, ivory text) and secondary (transparent background, charcoal border and text) variants. They have a 0.5rem border radius, generous horizontal padding, and a small icon optionally placed after the text. Hover states darken the background or fill it, with smooth color transitions.
Cards
Cards are used for content packages and featured items. They often sit on a transparent or tinted background (e.g., oat) and contain a title, description, metadata list, and a call-to-action button. They have a medium border radius and generous padding. On hover, if clickable, a subtle image zoom effect and shadow may appear.
Links
Text links use the serif or sans-serif body font and are underlined with a thin stroke. Hover states change the color to a muted gray or reveal a stronger underline. Footer links are a lighter gray and become darker on hover.
Hero Sections
Large, bold display headings dominate hero sections, often with a serif subheading. The hero uses a significant amount of vertical space and centers or left-aligns content depending on the section. Backgrounds are usually the warm ivory.
Footer
The footer uses a dark theme (charcoal background, ivory text) with a multi-column grid of links organized by category. Link text is small, sans-serif, and muted, becoming brighter on hover. Social icons and copyright information are included at the bottom.
Do's and Don'ts
Do
- Use the warm ivory background (#faf9f5) as the default canvas for all pages.
- Pair serif body text with sans-serif headings to maintain the editorial hierarchy.
- Apply generous vertical spacing between sections to create a calm, unhurried reading rhythm.
- Use the deep charcoal (#141413) for primary text and buttons to ensure strong contrast.
- Keep borders thin and subtle, relying on background shifts for surface separation.
- Use rounded corners sparingly: 0.5rem for interactive elements, 1rem for large containers.
- Reserve the clay accent (#d97757) for small, meaningful highlights, not large areas.
Don't
- Don't use pure black (#000000) or pure white (#ffffff) as primary text or background colors.
- Don't introduce heavy drop shadows or dramatic elevation effects.
- Don't use sharp corners (0rem) on interactive elements like buttons or cards.
- Don't use the serif font for small UI labels or buttons; reserve it for body copy.
- Don't overcrowd sections with dense content; maintain the airy, spacious feel.
- Don't use bright, saturated colors outside the defined earthy accent palette.
- Don't break the warm ivory foundation with cool grays or blues.
